On 13 July 2005,
our Sentinel was honoured to be invited to the Cart
Marking Ceremony in the City of London.
50 vehicles took
part in the Worshipful Company of Carmen annual
event – ranging from the un-powered push bike to
mighty tractor units from Volvo and Foden, with
steam-powered and historic commercial vehicles
appearing alongside modern autos.
‘Cart-marking’
celebrates the oldest form of vehicle-licensing –
when the permit to use a cart or vehicle in the City
was issued in the form of a branded licence letter,
this year the letter "O", stamped yearly.
The ceremony,
which took place in Guildhall Yard, saw each
vehicle brought forward for the Master's Inspection
before being branded by the Keeper of Guildhall
using a special brazier and gloves. Each year
the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor joins the
ceremony. Afterwards Lord Mayor, Master and
Warden doff their caps as each vehicle passes the
rostrum. |
